Costa Teguise is the starting point for buggy tours in the north of the island. You don't head for the southern volcanoes from here: instead you climb towards the Famara massif, past prickly-pear fields once farmed for cochineal, old quarries and viewpoints at close to 700 metres. It is the most-reviewed buggy tour on Lanzarote on GetYourGuide (4.6 out of 5 from more than 5,500 reviews), and also the one most exposed to the wind.

The buggies that leave Costa Teguise and are sold on GetYourGuide belong to H2O Sports Lanzarote, which also sells under the name Buggy Experience Lanzarote, so a "buggy experience" in Costa Teguise means this company. Other firms, such as LanzaBuggy, only pick customers up here for their routes in the centre and south. Platforms like Civitatis, Viator and OK Lanzarote resell this same route at the same price. For the full company profile, read our H2O Sports review.

The Costa Teguise buggy route

The 2-hour version, which H2O calls "Wild North", runs roughly in this order:

  1. Start at the shop in Costa Teguise, at sea level.
  2. The old quarries of Guatiza, a village that lived off cochineal and is still surrounded by prickly-pear fields. Above Guatiza and Los Cocoteros rises Montaña Tinamala, with its abandoned quarries of reddish stone; some reseller listings place the activity there, although H2O's own pages don't mention it.
  3. Presa de Mala (Haría municipality), the big 1970s dam that never really managed to hold water.
  4. The climb towards Peñas del Chache, the highest point on Lanzarote at about 670 m, in Haría.
  5. Down through Teseguite and the El Mojón quarry, then back to Costa Teguise.

The 3-hour version adds a stop about cochineal, plus Los Cocoteros and Charco del Palo.

One thing worth knowing in advance: the summit of Peñas del Chache is a military radar station. The buggies get close and you'll see it at short range, but nobody drives to the very top. If anyone promises you can "drive to the summit", be sceptical.

The 4- and 6-seater buggy route

The family ("mix") tour changes a few stops: Guatiza, Charco del Palo, Mala, Las Nieves, Teseguite and El Mojón. It takes in the Mirador de las Nieves, about 600 m up on the Famara cliffs, and the old lime kilns of Teguise, from the days when Teguise's lime works were among the largest in the Canaries. The GetYourGuide listing says roughly half the route is off-road and that you climb "from 0 to 670 m".

How much is a buggy in Costa Teguise?

All prices are per buggy, not per person. These are H2O's direct prices, which match GetYourGuide for the products sold on both sites:

VehicleDurationPrice per buggyPer person (full buggy)
Two-seat off-road2 hfrom €150€75 (2 people)
Two-seat off-road3 hfrom €200€100 (2 people)
Four-seat off-road2 hfrom €200€50 (4 people)
Four-seat off-road3 hfrom €270€67.50 (4 people)
Six-seat off-road2 hfrom €270€45 (6 people)
Six-seat off-road3 hfrom €340about €57 (6 people)

Hotel pick-up is optional and costs €5 per person. Until recently the 2-hour two-seater cost €130; it now starts at €150, so if a guidebook quotes the old price, don't rely on it.

On GetYourGuide you can check dates for the Costa Teguise two-seat buggy (€150 per buggy, up to two people) or see the 4- or 6-seater buggy (from €200 per buggy for up to four). Booking there gets you free cancellation up to 24 hours before and the option to pay later. To compare with the island's other bases, see our Lanzarote buggy price table.

Two, four or six seats: which to choose

  • Two-seater. The classic tour and the one with the most reviews. One of you drives, the other rides as passenger. It's the format that feels most like proper off-roading.
  • Four-seater. For families or two couples sharing one vehicle. Cheaper per person, and the route includes Las Nieves and the lime kilns.
  • Six-seater. Yes, it exists: H2O sells it at €270 (2 h) and €340 (3 h) per buggy. The exact model isn't confirmed, so don't trust listings that promise a specific one. With six people it works out at €45 a head on the 2-hour tour.

Requirements: age, driving licence and children

H2O is stricter here than some other firms:

  • Driver: aged 20 or over, with a licence held for at least 2 years. You must bring your original licence: copies and photos on your phone are not accepted. You'll also need a passport or national ID card.
  • Passengers: at least 1.35 m tall, including in the 4- and 6-seat buggies according to H2O's pages. One reseller (OK Lanzarote) says there's no height limit in the back seats of the four-seater; if you're travelling with young children, ask in writing before you pay.
  • Not recommended for pregnant women or anyone with back problems. There's no weight limit.
  • No flip-flops or sandals: closed shoes only.

If your licence was issued outside the EU or you're unsure about the age rules, check our licence and age guide.

Where it starts and how to get there

H2O's Costa Teguise shop appears with two addresses: the Buggy Experience website says Av. el Golf, next to the DISA petrol station, while other listings (Civitatis, OK Lanzarote) give Calle La Goleta. It's probably the same corner; check the exact meeting point on your voucher.

  • If you're staying in Costa Teguise, walk or take a short taxi ride.
  • From Arrecife it's about 8 km (12 minutes by car). Bus (guagua) line 1 links Arrecife and Costa Teguise.
  • From Puerto del Carmen it's 23 km, about 25 minutes without traffic; line 3 connects the two resorts via Arrecife.
  • From Playa Blanca it's 42 km, about 45 minutes. Booking the pick-up is the easiest option.

With the optional pick-up, wait outside reception 10 minutes before the time given: the driver waits 5 minutes at most.

Watch out for a common mix-up: H2O's on-road tour (El Cuervo volcano and Las Grietas) doesn't leave from Costa Teguise but from Puerto del Carmen. We explain it in buggy tours in Puerto del Carmen.

Wind, dust and cold in the north

The north is the part of the island most exposed to the trade wind (alisio), which blows from the north-east. What to know:

  • Summer is the windiest season, not winter: according to AEMET, the trade wind blows on 70% of days in July against 45% in January. One customer reports that in strong wind the steering takes real effort.
  • At 600–670 m it's about 4 °C cooler than on the coast, before you factor in the wind. H2O provides a windbreaker and asks you to bring warm clothes; from October to May, take a jacket.
  • Dust: the tracks throw up plenty. H2O hands out dust goggles and a helmet. A scarf or neck gaiter over your face helps a lot.
  • Calima: intense episodes of Saharan dust happen on about 24 days a year. If you have asthma or breathing problems, check the forecast.
  • The tour runs "rain or shine". In summer the UV index reaches 11–12, so wear sun cream even if it feels cool up top.

Buggy hire in Costa Teguise: is there any without a guide?

No. Neither in Costa Teguise nor anywhere else on the island have we found buggy or quad hire without a guide: everything runs in convoy behind the guide. The only motor vehicle H2O hires out unguided is the Can-Am Ryker, a three-wheeler, at €150 for 24 hours for up to two people, on a car licence. More in buggy hire on Lanzarote.

What could change: the Cabildo consultation

On 2 October 2026 the Cabildo de Lanzarote (the island council) opened a one-month public consultation on an island-wide bylaw that could restrict or ban buggies and quads on dirt tracks and rural land. Nothing is banned today and the tours are still running, but the north is exactly where residents of Guatiza have complained most about dust and noise.

In practice, routes may shift towards tarmac. When you book, confirm which route you'll be doing and choose free cancellation. We cover it in detail on the off-road buggy page.
